What a shame the so called progressive state of Victoria is really on
of the few barbaric ones left.
Duck shooting is nothing more than killing for fun.
There are no economic reasons for shooting ducks. Its cheaper to buy a
cooked chook from 'Woolworths or Coles.
The cost of ammunition is such that unless the shooter gets a duck per
shot the ammo is more costly than the food obtained.
Many shooters often cannot tell which species they are shooting at.
This has been established under scientific conditions.
Lead shot doesn't do much for the environment.
The "by-shoot", the ducks injured is usually many more than the ones
actually killed and picked up by the shooter.
Most of the by-shoot eventually die of wounds. Often painful wounds
which become infected.
The practice of shooting animals or birds for "fun" is less than
civilised.
When we worked to have such shooting banned in Queensland all we had
to do was tell people the government was declaring a Duck Season and
that they expected zzz ducks to be destroyed. Hundreds, in fact tens
of thousands volunteered to write to the premier and the minister
demanding shooting be stopped.
It worked.
Politicans get worried by lots of people, by newspapers and by talk
back radio all speaking out about something they can easily fix. No
costs, no expenditure, some back lash from the shooters but they are
greatly out numbered by those opposing killing native species.
Its time the people and environmental groups of Victoria got together
and worked co-operatively to convince the government that they are on
the wrong track.
