Hi Russ, Mike et al,
It was an interesting day for Needletails here in suburban Newcastle today.
From early morning until around 1pm there was a large, scattered "flock" that
stretched across several suburbs. I sat in my backyard and watched one "group"
of birds (about 30) wheel around for over an hour. The "flock" would be best
described as a "loose aggregation of small groups" - does this make sense?
2 birding friends who work about 3km from my house were watching the birds
also. They were near the eastern limit though there could have been more birds
to the west - I didn't check. The number of birds wasn't massive (I'd estimate
probably 300-500 birds - sorry but this is a crude estimate largely done from a
car driving along!) but it was fascinating to see them spread out over suburbia
like they were, stalling and displaying great aerobatics. Most "groups"
appeared to have been concentrated over parks and open spaces.
