Hi Jeff,
Lakefield NP is accessible by light 4WD. At least the road from Musgrave
Station into the park is. Once you turn south (towards the ranger station)
the road starts to become very corrugated and rough - also, beware the large
potholes filled with dust, and the deep sand drifts across the road. I
daresay it is still driveable using a Subaru, or similar. We eventually
abandoned the drive south though for fear of becoming stranded - we had (a
few days previously) a flat tyre and discovered that the rental company
hadn't provided the necessary equipment to change the tyre (hint: check that
you have all necessary equipment before leaving the car rental company). As
a result of this little incident we were a little gun shy.

I have nine days for birding around Cairns in a few weeks time and have done
the "normal" birding routes.
Does visiting Lakefield National Park require 4WD and if so will a
"lightweight" (e.g., Subaru) be enough or does it call for serious
backcountry 4WD?
Is there contact information for Artemis Station and the Windmill Creek area
to secure permission for birding the area (esp. for Golden-shouldered
Parrot)? Other places to look?
