Three words - waste to energy. If anyone on BA is doing research on oceanic
rubbish with findings or knows someone who is, please contact me off board. I
am aware of work that has been done in this regard in the Gulf Of Carpentaria
(our own ocean gyre and source of tremendous amounts of marine rubb ish), Lord
Howe Island and through SOSSA (latter two being involved with plastic
ingestion) but I would be very keen to speak to someone who has re-opened the
topic of whether this rubbish can somehow be harvested and used as fuel for W2E
plants. There are already two W2E plants in the US. One in Hawaii and another
in Alaska where oceanic rubbish is being used as a supplementary source of
fuel. To date, proposals for similar projects have had difficulty 'finding
legs' here in Australia.
