I spent 50 years as a racing cyclist and trained on country roads for many
thousands of km and I have been swooped by dozens of magpies when training
alone but never when training with others, I always advise people not to
turn their heads to look for the attacking bird, because that is when they
will hit you in the eye or side of the face, just keep your head down and
keep riding until you are out of the area.
Pied Butcherbirds can be just as bad, a mate of mine has a hole in his crash
helmet where one hit him very hard.
