A 7am visit to Bushell’s Lagoon yesterday 16 Aug produced similarly foggy
conditions to previous Sunday – although fortunately much warmer. Very
atmospheric but very poor visibility until mid morning. Very few waterbirds
present at the moment, mostly Coot and small numbers of more common duck
species (Black, both teal, Wood), Aust Pelican and Little Grebe. The flocks of
Little Black Cormorant have gone and there are very few Darters. Plenty of
cisticolas, one Clamorous Reed-warbler seen on 9 Aug. Brown Quail and Goldfinch
in good numbers. A Swamp Harrier the only raptor at the lagoon. Horsfields
Bronze Cuckoo also seen.
Just up the lane at the corner of Blacktown Road were Zebra, Double-barred and
displaying Red-browed Finch all in good numbers, Striated and Spotted
Pardalote, 3 Little Lorikeets and a Grey Goshawk – have not seen this species
in the Bushell’s vicinity before.
At Kurrajong Hills later yesterday morning was a sub-adult White-bellied Sea
Eagle which is unusual for the hills. Other good sightings included continuing
larger than usual numbers of Satin Bowerbird and White-naped Honeyeater – the
latter seem to be on the move again but this time not in association with
Yellow-faced Honeyeaters. Also Grey Goshawk, Yellow-throated Scrubwren, plenty
of Little Corellas and the usual pigeon species Brown Cuckoo-dove, Wonga and
Common Bronzewing.
A Feather-tailed Glider was near the house at night.
