it really depends on where you're planning to go. Mark Brazil's 'Birds of East
Asia' is great for Eastern China / Taiwan (and beyond - Korea, Japan, Eastern
russia etc. It doesn't however cover some of the best parts of China - Sichuan,
Xining etc.
I have 3 other Chinese field guides which are specific to China:
2 in English:
The Birds of China - Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee (Oxford) 1984
A Field Guide to the Birds of China - MacKinnon & Pillipps (Oxford) 2000
And a Chinese Guide (with maps, english and latin names as well as plates).
Published in 1995. I couldn't tell you the authors name as it's in Chinese
characters!
I've done many trips in China and all are useful, but none are up to date on
some of the more tricky genus - Phylloscopus Warblers etc. this entails
research into the published papers, songs etc.
