Bowra bird photo gallery

For some time now there has been speculation concerning the fate of "Bowra", a birdwatchers paradise on the outskirts of Cunnamulla in SW Queensland. I can't (and don't want to) add anything to that discussion but I would like to encourage birders to seriously consider "Bowra" in their birding plans. I have no commercial interest in the operation of "Bowra" and I have no commercial interest in any possible sale of the property to any entity. I am not related (as far as I know - even considering the theory of "6 degrees of separation") to anyone connected to "Bowra". My personal interest in "Bowra" (and its continued viability as a birdwatching destination) is simply in the fact that I have experienced the place and its birds and I count it as one of the best birding locations I have visited in Australia. During 2007 and 2008 I was fortunate to be able to spend several weeks at Bowra assisting (?) Dean Portelli in his PhD project studying Hall's Babblers. That time was often hectic involving walking several hundred kilometres throughout the property sometimes after rising before dawn on some very cold mornings. Other activities meant that I was able to be 'close-up' and somewhat 'personal' with Hall's Babblers and many other bird species. During my time there I was able to personally record 146 bird species from the overall list of more than 200. I was also able to photograph over 100 bird species during my spare time.

As an encouragement to birders considering their first trip (or for those birders who might be wondering if it is worth returning) I am in the process of creating a new photo gallery of the "Birds Of Bowra". I previously had a "Birds of Bowra" gallery on Flickr but I am moving my photos to SmugMug and have taken the opportunity to expand that gallery by adding more species and replacing some of the old photos. At the time of posting this email I have uploaded over 60 species, the non-passerines, and will be adding a further 40+ passerine species over the next week or so.

I had intended to complete the gallery before advising of its existence but, due to the time being taken in producing it and the current interest in "Bowra" on BirdingAus, I have decided to make it available in its incomplete form.

To see that gallery go to: http://ptiloris.smugmug.com/
Click on the "Nature" gallery and then select the "Birds of Bowra" gallery.
While viewing the gallery please keep in mind:
- the gallery is probably not complete (depending on when you view the gallery); - the gallery is intended to show a variety, but not all, of the bird species that can be seen on Bowra; - the photos are of varying quality and are not intended to display "award-winning" photography; - the photos were taken at different times of the year and therefore display a collection which cannot be seen during one short visit; - the variety of bird species likely to be seen on "Bowra" will depend on the particular season itself and the 'quality' of the season; - the fact that a particular species is displayed in the gallery is no gaurantee that the species will be seen during a visit;
- all of the photos in the gallery were taken on "Bowra";
- I photographed other species in the vicinity of but not on "Bowra" and, therefore, have not included those species in the gallery.

I hope that the gallery provides some enjoyment to the viewers and encourages more birders to visit the property.

If anyone believes any of my identifications or comments attached to the photos are erroneous I would be happy to be provided with the correct information and reasons for the suggested corrections.

Cheers
