I took my 2WD rental and headed up to Iron Range NP from Cairns because I heard
the road were "the best they've been in 17 years." I had 4 days which amounted
to 2 days of driving and 2 days of birding. The river/creek/puddle crossings
were all doable in the cheapest economy car. In all honesty, it wasn't a smart
or responsible thing to do, but what's done is done.
Life birds for me included...
Lockhart River
LESSER CRESTED TERN
EASTERN REEF EGRET
PALM COCKATOO
Portland Roads
ROSE-CROWNED FRUIT-DOVE
Cook's Hut/Rainforest Camp
TROPICAL SCRUBWREN
MAGNIFICANT RIFLEBIRD
TRUMPET MANUCODE
CHESTNUT-BREASTED CUCKOO
YELLOW-LEGGED FLYCATCHER
GREEN-BACKED HONEYEATER
TAWNY-BREASTED HONEYEATER
NOISY PITTA
ECLECTUS PARROT
RED-CHEEKED PARROT
YELLOW-BILLED KINGFISHER (heard only)
SUPERB FRUIT-DOVE (heard only)
MARBLED FROGMOUTH (heard only)
There were also multiple LARGE-TAILED NIGHTJARS in the drier forests in the
park. I saw WHITE-STREAKED HONEYEATER in the drier forest west of the park.
Good birding,
