David,

If you wanted to lash out, there is always "Handbook of the Birds of
the World Vol. 3". It covers Terns and Gulls as well as quite a few
other families, not all of them relevant to Australia. Not especially cheap though at €212. AbeBooks lists a couple of HBW 3 at around USD 250.

Cheers,

Carl Clifford

Hi all
I was wondering if there is a field guide reference book for Gulls &
Terns similar to the soft cover Onley & Schofield "Albatrosses,
Petrels & Shearwaters"?

Also how does "Shorebirds ,an Identification Guide" by Hayman,
Marchant and Prater compare with the recent Aussie shorebird book?
Sorry can't remember the name of that one either!

Cheers
