Good point, but I wonder what could have helped them?  I haven't been to those 
places - are there ponds, etc, there now where there previously were none, or 
not enough?

I can't really imagine anyone taking swamphens there deliberately, less so 

I also wonder about them "flying vast distances over the open ocean". Surely 
these birds don't just fly towards an empty horizon for days?  I imagine that 
they get blown to sea and are quite good floaters.  Is there any evidence of 
them flying long distances non stop?
