On the news tonight there was vision of a clean-up starting, though it looked a bit under resourced, but then again there is a lot of coastline to clean and i imagine that there are not that many people trained to do this type of work and you can't go at it hammer and tongs to do it properly. Look how long it has taken to clean up the Exon Valdez spill fully.

The QLD. government seems to be in charge.

How much? All I hope.

Who will pay? Hopefully the ship owners, but being Hong Kong based I would not hold my breath on that. The QLD/Federal Gov can arrest the ship and then if payment for the clean-up is not forth-coming, sell the ship. I don't know how much an 18 year old 25,00 Tonne tramp container ship will bring, but I imagine no where near enough to pay for the clean-up, so I guess the QLD taxpayer will wear a good of it.

I imagine that the QLD government will be trying to do a good job on the clean-up, seeing as there is an election just round the corner.

An equally important problem, which has not attracted enough attention, in my opinion, is what to do about the 35 or so containers of ammonium nitrate? With at least 650 Tonnes of a high potency fertiliser being dumped into a fairly small volume of sea would have a rather disastrous effect on the marine ecosystem.

The whole event may very well averted if the Federal Government had not allowed foreign shipping to take over our coastal shipping. The action of the Pacific Adventurer's captain during the whole debacle is a great example of the adage "if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys"

PS I just heard on the ABC news , that the Pacific Adventurer is now spilling into the Brisbane River. I the the vessel should be re- christened the Pacific Mis-Adventurer.

This morning it was announced that the "Pacific Adventurer" was carrying
more than 1/2 million litres of oil when its tanks were pierced.

See http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/03/13/2515278.htm?section=justin

Have seen some footage showing an oil affected godwit in breeding
plumage. Are there any updates on bird impacts affecting migratory
waders from this disaster?
