My experience is similar to Tom Tarrant's and New mans 'Birds of Southern
Africa'. While living in Johannesburg on an off for a decade I found that
Newman's was the guide kept in the glove box whether in Namibia, Zim or RSA.
Roberts was good to have a home because of the text along with the various
specialist guides mentioned elsewhere in the birding-aus. If it is practical
wait until you get to Jo-burg and have a look in Exclusive Books or similar.
There was one in the International Terminal from memory but on the outbound
side I think otherwise news agent. If you have the time any of the big malls
in Sandton, Randburg etc. have these bookshops in them. The advantage being
that you can go through a selection and decide for yourself.
I always found birding in southern Africa extremely hard work as you could
not down a complete "Castle" lager without five or six interruptions for new
