I have been guiding in the Wet Tropics for 14 years and have encountered House Swifts on four occassions. The description is typical of the species. In profile they look "softer" and less streamlined than Needletails. In 2003 I encontered a large flock of 100+ over Port Douglas. When first observed they were at an altitude of about 60 metres and were in a compact circling flock. They gradually gained altitude and remained above our location for 7 to 8 minutes and after that time drifted away in a southerly direction. It was a memorable experience for the number of birds present but also for the fact that they were totally silent.
My last sighting was at Rex Range south of Mossman in November 2006.
