THE department that now stands at the forefront of the bushfire fight has lost one of its own.

Leigh Ahern and his wife Charmian, who lived on Old Kinglake Road in the remote hilltop hamlet of Steels Creek, died in the fires. Mr Ahern had more than 30 years' experience in fauna survey, biodiversity planning and habitat conservation.

While he more recently worked as a private biodiversity consultant, much of his working life was spent as a government scientist. In a tribute published in /The Age/ yesterday, current and former staff of the Department of Sustainability and Environment and the Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research gave a glimpse of the couple they knew.

"We pay tribute to the friendship and contribution to ecological knowledge made by this highly regarded and respected couple," the message read.

It is believed at least 11 residents of Steels Creek perished in the bushfire.
