The main pond is still dry and getting a nice covering of grass, but the
puddles at the north platform have filled up and merged because of the light
rain over the weekend. As a result there aren't any muddy edges and I haven't
seen any crakes or rails.
I met some birders there yesterday morning who said they'd seen a Spotless
Crake at the north platform, and this morning I heard a Lewin's Rail there. It
was making the "mrrp!" call, which I don't think I'd heard yet this summer.
Little Grassbirds are usually seen well there. Yesterday morning I saw two
having a tussle, and was surprised to hear one give a typical plaintive
grassbird "pheeeep" call during the fight. It just didn't sound right for an
agressive call.
