Stuart W and myself made the trip on Saturday from Brisbane to Boonooroo
(east of Maryborough, on the coast)and were successfull in finding the
Asian Dowitcher previously reported by Chris Barnes (Thanks, Chris!)
We found it at the roost at Whitaker st - fairly easily I might add, as
there were only 3-400 birds there scattered thinly along the high tide
line (2.8 m high tide) leaving the birds about 80-100 meters from the
road. It was easily picked up in the scope, and identifiable by bins
(X10) once you knew what to look for!
We had spent 4 hours looking through the much larger wader flock just
around the corner (approx and conservatively, 2000 Godwits, 300 Little
Terns, 300 Terrick Sands, 200 Great Knot, 20 Grey Plover, 500 Mixed
Lesser and Greater Sand plover, Curlew Sands, Eastern Curlews,
Red-necked Stints, Oystercatchers etc)as they were pushed landwards by
the encroaching sea.
The Dowitcher was distinctly different once it's head was up! Head under
wing it woudl be difficult to differentiate from Great Knot, unless the
barring on the chest and flanks was clearly seen in good light. However
once that bill is exposed - Wow! No problemo! and then it was easy to
relocate, even asleep.
We called in to Cooloola on the way back and had about 9 sightings of
Ground Parrot involving at least 4 (probably more) individuals.
It's worth the drive, Brisbane birders!
