Thanks Greg for your reply. It was a fresh road-kill. The bird flew away
from me and I didn't stop as no binoculars anyway , so it could well have
been a juvenile.

To top off the weekend we were relaxing in our newly installed spa and a
Black-shouldered Kite cruised overhead just on dusk

Although it is uncommon for them to do so, there are records of both Brown
and Grey Goshawks feeding on carrion and road-kill. 

Although most of these involve fresh road-kill, some sightings do show that
they feed on decaying flesh. A number of the latter records involve
juveniles, so possibly desperately hungry individuals are doing this.
