I'm not an expert on petrels and shearwaters Peter.

Could you provide some more details - I presume the bird's underparts were brown? How large was the bird - was it similar to a Silver Gull in its dimensions?

It may be that you picked up a Providence Petrel or a possibly [less likely] a Great-winged Petrel.

Hi all,

On 11/01/09 on a visit to Yeppoon we were doing a bit of birding along the road to the Sandy Point area when we saw an exhausted seabird sitting in a puddle on the side of the road. The bird was in danger of being run over by the traffic of fishermen heading north. We caught the bird, wrapped it in a towel and called a local wildlife rescue person to ask for what to do with it. The advise was to place the bird close to the beach in a protected spot and let nature take it's course. Unfortunately we do not have any photos of the underwing as we did not want to handle the bird unnecessary. Back at home going through all the field guides we realise that identification isn't as straight forward as we initially thought. Any ideas?

Thanks for your responses in advance.

Regards

Peter Wilk
