Our annual Christmas/New year holiday in Margaret River has been enlivened
(as ever) by plenty of good bird sightings. Some of the more interesting are
listed below.

1. A male Western Shrike-tit accompanied by a juvenile in forest
between Margaret River and Cowaramup.
2. A pair of Southern Emu-wren near Caves Road a little way north of
Wallcliffe Rd.
3. A Red-eared Firetail on the lawn outside our lounge-room window (a
first for our 8 acre block in the Wildflower Estate).
4. A pair of Brown Goshawks perching on the pergola immediately above
our heads - until they saw us through the shade-cloth! [We suspect the
nearby well patronised birdbath might have been part of the attraction.]
5. Two White-necked Heron on a wonderful little wetland on a private
property at Old Karridale (thanks to Luke and Hayley Petersen) - and another
on a farm dam alongside Bussell Hwy between Augusta and Margaret River.
6. 29 Banded Lapwing in a short-grass paddock on the corner of Caves Rd
and Moses Rock Rd - by far the largest number of this species that I have
seen at a single site in WA (and exceeded only by the approx 60 in a paddock
west of Werribee township in Victoria a year or so ago).
7. A Square-tailed Kite flyover at a well-treed private property near
Yallingup (thanks to Jim and Marian Carroll).
