Hi David,

It is a juvenile, rather than an immature, Black-winged Stilt. Many people, including field guide authors, confuse the terms. A juvenile is a bird that is still in the plumage that it had when it left the nest. An immature is a bird that has not assumed full adult plumage but that isn't a juvenile. Some species moult directly from juvenile to adult plumage while others have an immature plumage stage.
