I've only been to this area a couple of times, and quite a while back
now - infact I think I saw my 28th birthday in on the summit which make
it almost ancient history. Laurie's comments re Mt Kinabalu contained
the same kind of advice I'd give. Most of the best birds I saw in the
park were not on the climb to the summit but in the lower park trails -
eg Whiteheads Trogon - although you might want the higher altitude
endemics too (cant remember off hand what these were..).
As is common in many tropical rainforest areas, things can die for hours
on end during the day. I struck this at Poring Hot Springs and wished
I'd been there earlier.
Have you considered the Kinabatangan River area? This is easily reached
from Sandakan, and was great not just for birds but many mammals -
Proboscis Monkeys in good numbers, and also saw truly wild Orangutan and
Bornean Gibbon here. Friends have seen Elephant here too.
I noticed you planned a Bako NP visit from Kuching. Personally I'd
suggest Niah Caves. I recall its a fair bit further but I found the
birding here excellent along the forest boardwalks and around the caves,
which are a spectacular sight in themselves. There was good basic accom
at the park entrance - and plenty of snakes so take care. I added few if
any species to my list at Bako.
I would think some more online research on some of the trip report sites
like Surfbirds might help with ideas.
