Rob,

I'd also recommend trying out the binoculars and going to a specialist
shop that has a good range. I bought a pair of 10 x 42 Leicas, very nice
binos. I'd suggest trying both 8 and 10 power binos it's a personal thing
working out if you can hold 10x binos steadily enough, also check the
weight differences, the Leicas and similar have a bit of weight to them.
The Nikon monarchs are quite nice and a bargain as well, Also look at the
Pentax roof prisms which are a nice bino. I tried them all out before I
bought the Leicas. I'd suggest trying both 8-10 x42 and 8-10 x 32 size,
the 32mm size is very compact and in better binos it can be hard to tell
the difference between them and their larger heavier 42mm cousins.

I'd suggest going to Bintel in Glebe, they have great service and a good
range in stock and knowledgeable staff who use the product. I prefer to
support an operation like this as opposed to a place that just sells
"boxes" with no knowledge of what's inside.

regards,

Chris Ross
