Mainly for Victorian based birdos.
A few interesting observations from last Saturday's (11 October) Friends
of French Island (FoFI) National Park trip. French Island is in Western
Port, a Ramsar site.
- Eastern, Scarlet and Rose Robins, with the first documented record of
Rose Robin breeding on the island (Blue.
- Whistling Kite, Swamp Harrier, Peregrine Falcon (in courtship flight),
Wedge-tailed Eagle and White-bellied Sea-Eagle (breeding)
- a Koala on the Tankerton jetty (safely put back in the bush by a Parks
Victoria ranger)
- 4 species of cuckoo (Horsfield Bronze, Shining Bronze, Pallid and
Fan-tailed)
- two species of sun-orchid, Milkmaids and various native blue bells
putting on a lovely flower display in the sunshine
Great to see the Sea-Eagles sitting next to each other in coastal trees
leading down to a secluded beach. Interestingly the Peninsula Field
Naturalists Club didn't see anything like what we picked up which reflects
you need to be in the right habitat. The Cape Barren Geese goslings we
detected on the last trip (east end of Tankerton Rd.) are now well grown
and just lacking the full adult colour of their parents.
The next FoFI trip will coincide with the BOCA Western Port wader count in
November.
