Hi there birders,

I have had the following request on my birding blog. Can anyone help identify this call?

I wonder if you could help me identify a call I am hearing in my garden at night. I think it is a bird but I could be wrong. We live on the North Shore in Sydney and just the last few nights have heard this alleged bird that sounds almost like a frog or a toad. The reason I think it is a bird is that the calls are more infrequent than I would imagine an actual frog or toad - also they move around the garden and seem to come from up above. In some cases it seems to be almost a Kookaburra calling but it never breaks out into full laughter. At other times there is a short shriek almost like an owl.

I was wondering whether you could help me identify this animal as it is keeping us busy looking through books and websites but so far we have found nothing.

Could it be a White-throated Nightjar?

Thanks for your help.

Trevor
