I wonder if some sort of clearing has occurred in the local area and
they have had to move on.

G'day Birders, this morning while walking back from dropping my kids at
school I saw a small brown bird in the undergrowth at Darks Common,
Lapstone. I tried to turn it into a white-browed scrubwren (as I would
have
expected here) but failed dismally. I ended up getting a fantastic view
of a
pair or Chestnut-rumped Heathwrens flitting around about 2 - 3 m from
me.
This I was not expecting. I have never seen a Heathwren here before and
to
put it into perspective, I used to walk to school through the same patch
of
bush. And yes, I would have noticed, I started birding in 5th class.

The really amazing thing is that this was my bogey bird for about 15
years,
and now it turns up less than 1 km from home. It will be interesting to
see
if they hang around as I wouldn't call it prime heathwren habitat as the

understorey isn't as thick as where I expect to see them (usually
further up
the mountains).

Cheers
Graham Turner
