I was out there with a friend on a property in a hide, overlooking the lagoon
for a few hours yesterday morning. We observed the following raptors at close
and far range:
Australian Kestrel (x1)
Black-shouldered Kite (x1)
Swamp Harrier (x1)
Whistling Kite (x3 at least!!!)
Brown Goshawk (x1, we think it was a BG, could have been a Collared Sparrowhawk
though and we sadly didn't get enough of a chance to observe tail in particular)
White-bellied Sea Eagle (at least one juvenile and two adults)
One thing of interest was as we watched an adult Sea Eagle on the southern
side of the lagoon harass and chase a Swamp Harrier for most part from the
causeway east to almost the end. Then it turned back and landed a short distance
from the water's edge. As we watched, the Eagle moved its head down toward
the ground much like as if it were feeding. So we assumed that it chased
the Harrier and in the end it dropped the prey it would have been carrying
and the Eagle finished it off soon in the company of four Australian Ravens.
It was also interesting to see the Ravens harassing Whistling Kites a number
of times and fortunately they were not far from our hide, so images were
feasible.
regards
Akos :)
