I visited my parents in McKinnon (15km SE of Melbourne) yesterday, and
was surprised to hear Brown Thornbills in the trees next door. I
couldn't see them properly, as I didn't have binoculars, but I don't
know what else could sound like that.

I lived there 20 years ago but, although I've only been birding for the
last couple, I don't recall hearing that call there before. Is this a
species that has moved back into these suburbs? The nearest parkland to
their house would be a kilometre or so away, so I guess that indicates
that they are garden residents.
