Jim,
Sarus Cranes do not breed at Bromfield Crater. They roost there with many Brolga. Brolga numbers seem to be up this year at this site but that is not backed by a count. Saw a Brolga pair with twins and a one year old at Cook Rd, East Barron intersection on Monday and again on Thursday. They move as a family group but the one year old is doing a bit of displaying. The closest to Cairns by road that Sarus are roosting at the moment is on the southern edge of Yungaburra. They are feeding on the western side of Mount Quincan. Other birds do visit Mareeba but don't know if they are roosting there this year. You are welcome to give me a ring when you are in the area for up to date info.
Regards,
Alan Gillanders
