There's no reason why you can't have your cake and eat it too. You can, for example, easily type "blue crane" [a name my father uses] followed by (White-faced Heron).

Not only do you educate people about alt names that they may come across in conversations with non-birders, but you also keep the C&B police happy.

i agree that butter bum is fine in a conversation between friends or associates but to use it in any place or forum where there iare probably others not familiar with your slang terms is somewhere between inconsiderate and lazy.
