Hi All

On Kangaroo Island in SA, Fantailed cuckoos do not call throughout the year.
They are quite strictly July to about January and quiet thereafter. I
generally regard their calls in July as a first indicator of the approaching
late winter-spring-summer breeding season.

Not really "a sure sign that the breeding season has started" (although that
depends on how you define "season" and "started"). I heard them in two
places about 50 km apart in two days in late May on the NSW south coast.
They will call through the year.
