A brief report of a trip to French Island Western Port by members of
Friends of French Island National Park (FoFI) and others last Saturday 12
July.

The day was a joint activity with the Landcare group, Parks Victoria and
French Island landowners. The day's activity was treeplanting and
monitoring of previously planted flora, at Long Point near Rams Island
which lies just off the southern side of French Island.

Main birding highlight of the day was an observation of Cape Barren Goose
breeding. After alighting at Tankerton by ferry we travelled east and saw
a pair of geese north of Tankerton Rd. They had at least 6 small
(striped!) downy young in tow. Good to see some early breeding by these
geese on the island.

Not much else about in the cold and windy conditions with mainly bird
calls heard rather than birds seen (Grey Fantail, White-fronted Chat,
Brown and Yellow-rumped Thornbill). The group was provided with a superb
lunch in the household of the one of the islanders ... a chance to chat
with and share experiences of the island.

The island and park are always worth a visit, especially as a member of
the friends group which means your transport is organised and paid for to
the island. There is a Visitors Guide for the national park on the Parks
Victoria web site as follows:
