On 4-7 July paid a flying visit to Christmas Island. Three Masked
Lapwings of the tropical northern nominate form were present on the golf
course 5-7 July. Photographs were obtained. Not sure how many records
there are of this taxa on CI. No sign of any vagrants of the previous
reports in March which is not unexpected. A lot of time was spent
scouring the noddies in Flying Fish Cove for Lesser Noddy and hopefully
the Elegant type Tern unsuccessfully. Also of note could not find a
White-breasted Waterhen during this visit despite frequenting the
territories of the four normal pairs during this time. The cool, dry,
windy conditions may not have helped or possibly this population is on
the decline. All of the rest of the usual suspects were seen with great
views of the hawk-owl, three goshawks, excellent frigatebird, tropicbird
and booby action, Emerald Dove (Asian); CI Imperial-Pigeon, White-eye,
Island Thrush, Java Sparrow et al. The twin half hour stopovers on Cocos
turned up White Tern, Green Junglefowl, Eastern Reef Egret and Rufous
Night-Heron.
