Hi All.
The last few weeks have seen plenty of early morning, ie
7.30-8.30, activity in Mulgoa Valley/Mayfair Rd.
Three WHITE SPOONBILLS flying over, WHITE MORPH GREY GOSHAWK,
SPARROWHAWK, two pairs of GOLDEN WHISTLERS. ROSE ROBINS left three weeks
ago, except for a single "Brown Bird" which may have been a Red-capped
Robin, browner rather than the dark greyish Roses, no forehead patch, bars
on wings, repeated but single "chip" call, seen yesterday.

JACKY WINTERS have over-summered, nicely plumaged OLIVE-BACKED
ORIOLES, flocks of up to fifteen BAR-SHOULDERED DOVES and ten PEACEFUL
DOVES, as well as several BRUSH BRONZEWINGS, and a BROWN CUCKOO-DOVE three
weeks ago. The Bar-Shouldered seem to have displaced the Top-knot Pigeons
which had been resident for years but not seen recently around the lower
part of Mayfair Rd. EASTERN WHIPBIRDS and GREY SHRIKETHRUSHES active, SATIN
BOWERBIRDS growling around and EASTERN SPINE-BILLS calling as are FAN-TAILED
and GOLDEN BRONZE CUCKOOS.
Six NUTMEG MANNIKINS in the paddock, along with twenty or so
RED-BROWED FINCHES and DOUBLEBARS. SUPERB and VARIEGATED BLUE WRENS,
WHITE-BROWED SCRUBWREN. STRIATED PARDALOTES, VARIED SITELLAS, WEEBILLS
GREY FANTAILS and YELLOW THORNBILLS in mixed feeding flocks with
migrating SILVEREYES. Flocks of YELLOW-FACED HONEYEATERS, NOISY FRIARBIRDS
and WELCOME SWALLOWS moving North. BLACK-FACED CUCKOOSHRIKES resident, GREY
BUTCHERBIRDS at the top of the hill. Large groups (up to fifteen) of
PEEWEES, MAGPIES, NOISY MINERS and BELL MINERS have dispersed and spread
out, but PIED CURRAWONGS still grouping. AUSTRALIAN RAVENS, three or four
only, compared to scores before the local tip was disciplined. KOOKABURRAS
calling.
A pair of RESTLESS FLYCATCHERS near the dam, also WOOD-DUCKS and
MASKED LAPWINGS, a transient pair of GREY TEAL, resident PURPLE SWAMPHENS.
LITTLE PIED CORMORANT and PACIFIC BLACK DUCKS. Four or five WILLIE WAGTAILS
evenly spread.
Small flocks of SULPHUR-CRESTED COCKATOOS, GALAHS inspecting holes in
the large eucalypt at the bottom of Mayfair. Several YELLOW-TAILED BLACKs,
RAINBOW and MUSK LORIKEETS shrieking around, RED-RUMPED PARRAKEETS. CRIMSON
and EASTERN ROSELLAS.
Plus the HOUSE SPARROWS, STARLINGS, RED-WHISKERED BUL-BULS,
BLACKBIRDS, INDIAN TURTLE-DOVES, INDIAN MYNAS.

A dozen STRAW-NECKED IBIS in Penrith itself on the large field next to
K-mart, and one in the Valley, not seen here by me for many years.

                                          Spring will be interesting!

                                                       Cheers
                                                              Michael
