Wendy,

It is not just the members of Genus Sula that suffer at the hands of "nasty word" filters. Try sending an email with the common names of many members of the Family Paridae or of Phalacrocorax carunculatus, P. brevirostris or their cousins to a list and see how many get to the intended recipients. As for the common name for the genus Sula, well there are 3 meanings for it. The one that some perceive is offensive is quite recent, only coming into use in the 1930's as a corruption of "Bubby". The other two meanings have been in use since the 17th Century.

As far as I am concerned anyone who takes offence at the use of this longstanding word as a common name for the Genus Sula is one of the other meanings of the word and should go back to putting trouser legs on their pianos and tables. It really makes one wonder where the minds of people who object to the use of some words because they might be taken salaciously dwell. Must be spooky in there.

Cheers,

Carl Clifford

"rude' sites will have a field day with this news item!!!

A friend, too whom I sometimes forward bird-aus info, is on a work (local gov) site that filters all 'bad' words to 'protect' recipients. There are no
children involved, it is just so recipients are not shocked or hurt!! A
return message claims filtered docs are moderated and forwarded if not
offensive, but this does not happen!
I have previously check the filter for this bird group and it is deemed
offensive!! Now Killer Boobies!
Beware of Killer Boobies! They may well shock and offend!
