Hi all,
This is a great opportunity to see Bowra for yourself!! This property in SW
QLD has been topical on birding-aus recently.
Below is an advertisement seeking volunteer help for the month of AUGUST 2008
for my PhD research on Hall's Babblers at Bowra station. The birdlife on Bowra
is going from strength to strength after more recent rain following the great
falls over summer. It has brought in some more species to the many already on
the property, including Squatter Pigeons and Diamond Firetails. Flock
Bronzewings are still being reported in the district.
No research or science skills are necessary, volunteers need only be
reasonably fit, able to spend long hours out in the field surrounded by birds
and be easy-going and able to work as part of a team.

Volunteer Positions
Behavioural ecology of Hall's Babbler (Pomatostomus halli): an endemic,
cooperatively-breeding bird of eastern Australia
Project Overview
This research focuses on the social organisation and habitat selection of
Hall's Babbler, the least known of all Australian babblers. The research that
will be undertaken during the period will investigate differences/similarities
in structural and floristic characteristics of habitat occupied by Hall's
babbler, Grey-crowned Babbler, and Chestnut-crowned Babbler relative to the
range in 'available' habitat for these species on the study site. This
research is crucial to understanding the habitat requirements of Hall's
Babbler, which is poorly understood and highly desirable as the species is
listed as threatened in New South Wales (listed as Vulnerable).
Volunteer Activities
Volunteers will work in a team to quantify habitat characteristics in field
survey plots. Training in all aspects of the work will be provided and no
skills are necessary (although amateur botanists are most welcome!).
Data collected will include variables such as plant species composition, tree
density and height, shrub density and height, and ground cover.
As survey plots will be established across the study site volunteers will
become acquainted with a wide variety of birds present on Bowra including
Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush, White-browed Treecreeper, Bourke's Parrot, Pink
Cockatoo, Spotted Nightjar, Crested Bellbird and of course Hall's Babbler.
Volunteers will also gain an appreciation for the diversity of habitats and the
associated plants and animals that occur within them. See below for a complete
list of bird species recorded on Bowra.
Some work will also be undertaken with Hall's Babblers including locating
breeding nests and observing colour-banded birds.
Where
This research is being undertaken at Bowra Station, located on the outskirts
of Cunnamulla in southwest Queensland. Bowra is a unique property with a high
diversity of habitats and consequently a rich fauna and flora, particularly
birds.
Accomodation will be provided at no cost. Volunteers can choose to camp or
bring along their caravan, or stay in the refurbished Shearer's Quarters. There
are toilet and shower facilities and the quarter's has a fully-contained
kitchen.
The local town, Cunnamulla, located only 16km from the station has numerous
facilities including supermarkets, pharmacy, pubs, library (with internet
access), post office, and hospital.
Bowra is easily accessible along major highways from Sydney, Melbourne and
Brisbane. Public transport is available only from Brisbane via two buses
(Brisbane-Toowoomba, Toowoomba-Cunnamulla).
When
Volunteers are required for the month of August 2008 and are requested to stay
for a minimum of one week, although longer periods (including the full four
weeks) are preferable.
Costs
Accommodation costs will be covered. Limited funding is available to reimburse
travel costs. Please feel free to discuss any issues relating to costs with me.
