David James and I visited Bega and caught up with the Pied Heron still
present at Glebe Park. It was feeding in the extensive rafts of lilies
so look for it there. Many thanks to the original finders of this bird.
A few other interesting sightings included a few White-headed Pigeons at
this site. At Eden Wharf 10 Pacific Gulls and 3 Black-faced Cormorants.
A stunning male White Goshawk perched beside Princes Hwy near Merimbula
turnoff. A pair of Sooty Owls showed well in Mimosa Rocks NP. If you
like frogs Dendy's Toadlet was calling after the recent deluge. Also of
note was a presumed hybrid Crimson-Eastern Rosella on Bird Route No. 1
between Bega and Tathra. With big white cheeks rimmed in blue and the
lime yellow coloured rump and belly of an Eastern but otherwise
brilliant scarlet and paired with a Crimson it was a bit eyecatching! At
the big wetland here was a flock of Little Ravens with a few Shelduck
and Shoveler but could not find any Australasian Bitterns. At Wairo
Beach a NZ Furseal female was hauled out trying to have a snooze but
surrounded by people with dogs despite the beach signs saying No Dogs!
Another interesting sighting was a Feather-tailed Glider seen on Sat
night in Royal NP along Lady Carrington Drive.

Cheers

Dion
