On the topic of Magpie Geese, a small group of local birdos did the rounds of
the wetlands on Thursday (June 5) to check on the breeding status of the local
Black-necked (Satin) Storks. Three adult storks were present at Crowsnest
Swamp, near Pillar Valley. In addition there were at least 6 Magpie Geese,
partly obscured by the tall rushes. There may well have been more there.
Sightings of Magpie Geese in the Valley have decreased from regular
observations of 50-100 birds to virtually none, except for 2 birds at a poultry
farm north of Coutts Crossing some weeks ago, and the birds seen on Thursday.
Although it can't be proven, geese being seen in other parts of northern NSW
may have originated in the Valley. The other alternative is that they have
just flown to less accessible (less visible) areas of the Valley.
A total of 11 Storks was seen - 3 adults at Crowsnest Swamp, an adult pair at
the nest at Gilletts Ridge, a pair on the nest and a juvenile at a wetland at
Coutts Crossing, a banded juvenile between Gilletts Ridge and Ulmarra and a
pair at or near the nest at Swan Creek.
Brolgas, Wedge-tailed Eagles and Comb-crested Jacanas were at a number of
sites. Four Coastal Emus were at Crowsnest Swamp.
