I've found that not to work for me, in fact, ading ",australia" actually
excludes those markers even when zoomed in to Australia because the word
Australia doesn't appear in the text for them. (It does now.) That
method does work for the standard place names, e.g. Melbourne.

This appears to be a general search constraint in GoogleEarth, probably
as a way of limiting search results. You can get around this, even when
not having the area map displayed on the screen, by adding the country
to the search criteria. Eg. if you are looking for "st joseph" in
Australia but do not have that area map displayed you can search on "st
joseph, australia"
