Weipa may not have a great deal of unique birding attractions, but last night
on an off the beaten track drive I observed a large number of nocturnal birds,
some at close range, just in the headlights of my car - no spotlight used at
all.  In approximately 1 hour along about 25km of track, I came across 16
Boobook owls, 8 Spotted nightjars, 3 owlet nightjars, 4 Papuan Frogmouths, 6
Tawny Frogmouths, and a lone bush thick knee.  Some of these birds were able to
be approached on foot at a range of almost touching and many would have
certainly been run over by less careful drivers.  Also seen was an unknown
species of elapid snake and large tailed night jars were heard earlier in the
evening along a watercourse.
