I drove up there back in 2003 as part of a bigger trip across the top
end and FNQ. My itinerary was starting from Kingfisher Park Julatten,
Artemis Station for Golden Shouldered Parrot, (ask at Kingfisher),
Archer River overnight then Iron Range for 3 nights, Moreton Telegraph
Station, Twin Falls 2 nights (via the OTL track), Punsand Bay for 5
nights, Twin Falls and I think one more overnighter then back down the
OTL through to Lakefield for 2 nights then Cooktown for 2 then Cape
Tribulation. That's about 17 days and quite comfortable and relaxing
trip at that pace. Twin Falls is a great spot not too many birds but
the swimming was excellent, the cleanest freshest 26° water you'll ever

Roads are not difficult, the main difficulty will be creek crossings and
that will vary depending on how much rain there's been. I quite liked
the OTL track as it is basically 2 wheel tracks and because you are
going slow relatively smooth. The bypass tracks have absolutely
horrible corrugations. The road as far as the OTL turn off are
basically dirt highways a bit corrugated in spots but OK. We met
someone who had got to the tip in a 4WD hiace/tarago type van, but
they used the bypass roads not the OTL. The corrugations will depend
on how recently the graders been through, particularly south of the OTL
turn off. apparently they are always bad north of there. Also signage
is near non existent north of the start of the OTL. so good maps are a
must.
