We had a beautiful visitor in a gum tree in our backyard late this
afternoon, but we can't work out what kind of parrot it is. It is green with
a huge red beak, a pink stripe on the back of its neck, with a beautiful
long tail about as long as a macaw's tail. It was getting dark, but we
managed to take a couple of pictures of it (links below)
If anyone knows can ID it for us, we'd be so grateful if you could let us
know! Nothing in the Australian guide books looks similar. Our thoughts are
that it is someone's escaped pet. He seemed very happy, and chattered to us
for a while before flying into the forest across the road. Maybe he'll seem
very attractive to the scaly breasted lorikeets over there and we'll see
some long tailed varieties around here soon, lol.
