Working across the road from the Botanical Gardens, I've been watching the buff
banded rails there for some time. i spoke to someone from the gardens who said
they have been resident for at least 7 years, and nest near the herbarium
building each year. I saw some chicks near the Levy fountain a few years back.
They were standing in the middle of the path. They are black and fluffy and had
attracted a large group of tourists, which was just as well, as 2 ravens and a
currawong were waiting for their chance. Luckily though they made it to the
undercover. The Gardens person says a lot of the chicks get taken by
Kookaburras and foxes.
Anyway, i see them quite regularly in the Gardens, especially near the
Macquarie Street gates (and even on Macquaire Street!), the Captain Cook
fountain and near the herbarium. I have a nice photo which I'll upload of one
which kept trying to raid my lunchbox.
  Dave
