The water is so low now that at the southern platform only in a couple of spots
are the reeds within a foot of the water. I haven't spent long there lately but
could see 5 or 6 Spotless Crakes in one binocular view last night around 6.

The shade cloth over the railing of the northern platform hasn't been
vandalised so this morning I put the second piece back up and will leave it
there. This allows you to approach without scaring any birds off. You'll need
to duck down, and tiptoe over the gravel.

I had a good view of a Lewin's within minutes there last night, and could hear
one when I had a quick look this morning around 8.

Previously I've only recommended the northern platform for photography, but as
there's a still good puddle of water there I'd say it might be the birds'
preferred location now. With the main pond so low there's the added attraction
that a few bush birds are coming down to drink there.

Location: Melway ref 54 C10, behind Mt St Joseph Girls' College in Altona,
north of the railway line.
