Sorry I meant "four subspecies of Cackling Goose " (not "species")

Chris,

I guess nothing can ruin my bad reputation of giving comlicated answers, so I
just go on ;-)

There are seven subspecies of Canada Goose plus four subspecies of Cackling
Goose (these two species form together with Barnacle Goose a superspecies).
It is believed that Atlantic (or Eastern) Canada Goose (B. c. canadensis) is
the one introduced to NZ.

Here is some information on their ID:
http://www.sibleyguides.com/canada_cackling.htm
http://www.oceanwanderers.com/CAGO.Subspecies.html

and here some more publications:
Boon, L. & M. Berlijn (2001): Identification of Canada Goose forms. Birding
World 14: 160-161.
Eds. of Birding World (Gantlett, S., S. Harrap & R. Millington, 1999): Canada
Goose forms (answer to a letter by B. Richards). Birding World 12: 82-83.
Lehmann, P. (2001): Canada Goose forms. Birding World 14: 159.

Cheers,

Nikolas

Hi all
1 in October 2002 at Shoalhaven Heads, 2 in December 2007 at Ulladulla
and now 4 in March 2008 4 at Killalea SP.
This is a range of about 80 to 180 Km south of Sydney.
The birds were on the southern side of the lagoon accessed from the main
car parks or the surfing car parks. They were quite shy behaving
similarly to the Black Swans in swimming quietly out into the lagoon as
I approached. They were in the company of the long time, 5 + years,
resident Greylag Goose which may have attracted them down.
ORAC submission being prepared.
I think I read some where that there are 2 sub-species which are
different in the amount of white going up the side of the face so can
any one confirm this and if so what is the sub-species in NZ.
Cheers Chris
