Alan Stuart asked whether he could expect to see OBPs at Melaleuca in mid
September.
The answer is no - you would need to be very lucky. From memory I think the
earliest arrival date at Melaleuca is late September [don't have the data to
hand]. Most OBPs do not arrive at Melaleuca until mid-late October. At that
time they are pre-occupied with gaining a nest site and mate and are not
necessarily easy to find. Through December the females are spending most of
their time inside a hollow [or nest box] and are therefore pretty much out of
sight. By far the best time to see good numbers is in the 2nd half of January
and first half of February when breeding has finished and the juveniles have
boosted the numbers. At that time good numbers are visiting the feed table
outside the Deny King Hide throughout the day, but early morning is best.
Adults begin drifting north in late February and the juveniles follow in March.
By end of March they have all left Melaleuca.
