Philip,

The ABC article in question refers to a flock of ~250,000 Banded Stilt identified by myself and several members of the AWSG during the annual Coorong Wader Count (SA) last weekend. The birds are located in the southern lagoon of the Coorong towards the western side. They are difficult to observe without a boat or plane. The Banded Stilt flock exceeds the most recent mega-flock (100,000 birds in 2006) and is likely to be one of the largest flocks of Banded Stilts observed. The Aust. population for Banded Stilt quoted in 'Shorebirds of Aust', Geering et al, (2007) is 206,000 birds.

Regards, Paul.
