Hi David (and all),
You've prompted me to put up a trip report for a drive I just did from
Melbourne to Brisbane. I made 3 stops on the trip (so it was rather
rushed), those stops being Chiltern, Barren Grounds, and Jerseyville.
Chiltern yielded not much, as the drought has heavily impacted bird and
species numbers in the area. A fall of around 60mm a few days before had
freshened things up, but probably was too recent to help with the birds. I
had some Diamond Firetails at Lancashire Gap Rd near the main highway, and
Black-chinned Honeyeaters at a very dry Cyanide Dam.
Barren Grounds was amazing, with reasonable views of Eastern Bristlebird
gleaned by heading left along the escarpment from the main picnic area. The
bird was initially located by call and waiting around for it paid off as it
hopped around in a bush checking me out for a minute or so. Couldn't focus
my camera on it in the bush but definitely great views of a great bird. I
also had Beautiful Firetails in the picnic ground, and 5 Pilotbirds in the
carpark near the old information centre at the entrance. One Pilotbird did
something very interesting for a mid to late summer, which was pick up a
downy feather, play with it for a while, then fly off into the bush with
it. Potentially some very late nesting?
Jerseyville (obviously) was for the Lesser Yellowlegs, which thanks to Ken I
saw magnificently. It stayed out in the middle of the water, so no real
opportunity for good photos, but views through the scope were superb.
So David, to answer your rfi, if you go to the picnic ground, head left
along the escarpment, and keep your ear out for Eastern Bristlebird calls,
you're bound to come across one sooner or later. I'm also told they bounce
across the track occasionally, though I didn't witness this. I did however
see a juvenile Eastern Whipbird bounce across the track a couple of times,
which sure got the heart started.
