Hi Arwen and others,
I was an avid reader of Arthur Upfield in my late teens and early twenties
and enjoyed his books and the locations of stories - and seeing Wolf Creek
Crater in northern WA after I had read his book based on a murder committed
near there was a special thing for me.
However his knowledge of birds was poor! He knew nothing about Ravens and
Crows! So in the late 1950's most people I knew called Tawny Frogmouths
"Mopokes" even though the "mopoke = bookbook" call was made by the Southern
Boobook and Upfield was no different. I think that people thought that the
"mopoke" call was made by the "Mopoke" ie the Tawny Frogmouth!
