Hi Arwen,
Jackass is (was) a common name for the Laughing Kookaburra. Never
heard it used of Grey Butcherbird!

And if you don't have this phrase in your birdspeak repertoire yet
perhaps you'd like to add it: "From jackass to mopoke" (also "from
jackass to jackass"), according to the Macquarie Dictionary
predictably means "from dawn to dusk". In case you didn't know, a
jackass is apparently a Grey Butcherbird, and since we have what
sounds like thousands around at the moment, the phrase was very apt
yesterday!
